A creditors' rights, insolvency and bankruptcy attorney for 40 of his 44 years in practice, Norm has represented debtors, secured and unsecured creditors, creditors’ committees and bankruptcy trustees in all phases of proceedings under the Bankruptcy Code.

 

Norm has extensive experience handling reorganizations, in-court and out-of-court loan workouts, creditor compositions, liquidations, assignments for the benefit of creditors and various other matters involving financial distress. He has served as bankruptcy trustee in a number of significant cases and is a member of the Private Panel of Trustees for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Norm is a charter member and has served as President of the TMA/Chicago Midwest Memorial Scholarship Foundation from January 1, 2011, through December 31, 2012. Norm is a past chair of the board of directors of the Buffalo Grove Unit of the American Cancer Society and a volunteer with the Northwest Suburban Jewish Community Center.

Norm is the author of several articles and is a frequent speaker on insolvency, bankruptcy and creditors’ rights topics for a variety of business and professional groups.

    The March edition of the TMA Newsletter celebrates 30 years of the existence of the Chicago/Midwest Chapter of the TMA. Past and current Chapter Presidents are featured on the cover, including SFGH's Chris Horvay and Norm Newman. 

    Norm Newman served as President in 2008. Norm said of his time as president: “The most memorable aspect of my involvement with TMA has been the close professional and personal relationships I have developed over the years with people who are extremely passionate and dedicated to the TMA and to the industry in which we practice.”

    Chris Horvay served as President from 1997 to 1998. Chris commented that the "growth [of TMA] has been enormous and constant and has gone through several different phases . . . I have really gotten to know a bunch of people really well and have been lucky enough to have become friends with them."

    Norman B. Newman Joins Sugar Felsenthal Grais & Helsinger LLP

    Sugar Felsenthal Grais & Helsinger LLP announced today that leading bankruptcy attorney Norman B. Newman has joined its Chicago office as Senior Counsel in its Corporate Restructuring, Insolvency & Special Situations Group. Norm joins the Firm from Much Shelist, P.C., where he served as Practice Group Leader of its Creditor Rights, Insolvency & Business Bankruptcy Group for many years.
